I quit drinking wine in 2019. Only for 30 days. BUT I had just turned 40, and suddenly I was waking up every night at 3 a.m., wired and restless. So I read The Alcohol Experiment by Annie Grace and gave up booze. After 10 days of detox, I slept a glorious eight hours straight through the night. It was the first time in several years actually. And I LOVE to sleep, so this single experience led to a changed relationship with alcohol and how it impacted my identity as I aged.
Nearly two years later, I bought the domain name for Sèchey. A brand created for the “alcohol flexible” (essentially ME) but really for all genders & generations. We launched to bring awareness, convenience, and education for no and low-alcohol alternatives to the sober curious. Our tagline is #drinklesslivemore.
Today, the women’s health market is booming. So is the alcohol industry. Both are projected to surpass $1 trillion in 2027, despite the negative headlines around alcohol and cancer. Sèchey sits at the intersection of these two powerful forces and is a daily witness to the cultural shift toward hybrid drinking. Consumers aren’t quitting alcohol outright, they are still buying it, they are just drinking less and spending more on brands they love.
Generation X women currently have the highest annual spending and control the majority of household purchasing decisions. Millennial women are close behind, rising in affluence and influence. Together, they are reshaping what’s in our glasses.
The New Ritual
For many women, drinking wine was once a symbol of empowerment. A reward after a long day. A way to reclaim time and space for themselves. But as we enter midlife, those rituals start to feel different. The hangovers hit harder. The sleep gets worse. The connection between alcohol, hormones, anxiety, and fatigue becomes impossible to ignore.
Enter mindful drinking.
This isn’t about sobriety or prohibition. It’s about permission to live more intentionally. It’s about celebrating the rituals we love, without the side effects we don’t.
The Menopause Opportunity
We talk a lot about fertility and pregnancy in the women’s wellness space, but menopause? It’s often left out of the conversation. And yet, it affects over half the population and directly intersects with how alcohol is metabolized, how hormones fluctuate, and how we feel in our own skin.
From hot flashes to mood swings, alcohol can amplify menopausal symptoms. But more importantly, many women are realizing that what used to work for them…no longer does.
This is the moment to meet women where they are with wellness products that align with their evolving needs. With communities and brands that honor this next chapter.
What Comes Next
At Sèchey, we believe in celebrating life, with or without alcohol! We believe the future of drinking is inclusive. As the conversation around women and alcohol evolves, so does the opportunity to innovate and invest in the future of drinking.
Because midlife should be a catalyst, not a crisis.
Absolutely on point! I am at the heart of Gen X, as are a lot of my clients - dealc wine is what drives all of my events and in home curations.
